I think it's a given that we, especially as women and mothers, are always trying to do our best to take care of those we love.
We try to make better choices on the foods we eat. We try to make sure that everyone is drinking enough water and getting enough sleep. So it can be super frustrating to find out that some of our well thought out choices are actually no better than the junk we're trying to avoid.
So how do we even begin to make the switch to safer if we aren't even sure what safer actually is??
I totally get your frustration and I'm hoping I can help just a little!
My number one suggestion is to ditch the "fragrance". No, I'm not just talking about the perfume and body spray, but rather anything with the word "fragrance" listed as an ingredient.
Did you know that the word "fragrance" is considered a trade secret meaning companies don't actually have to disclose the ingredients they are using to create said fragrance.
Cool, huh?
So what exactly does that mean? It means that let's say a company claims to not use parabens in their products, they aren't listed as an ingredient, but there is nothing stopping them from using parabens to preserve ingredients used to make up the fragrance. So they could be using parabens or whatever while claiming not to.
These companies know that consumers are looking for safer products. The clean industry is up. But without many regulations, companies can pretty much get away with anything when it comes to marketing and greenwashing.
The next breakup I encourage is dryer sheets. These might be the most toxic household item that most people use. I know, I know, we love the way our clothes smell (fragrance, anyone?) and we love how soft our clothes feel, but I promise, if you knew the harmful chemicals and ingredients in those little sheets you wouldn't worry about the way you smell or how soft your clothes are when you realize just how harmful they can be to our health.
A great alternative is a wool dryer ball (you can find these at most retailers in the laundry aisle) and your doTERRA oil of choice.
I'll be sharing lots more DIY safer switches down the road. And I would love to hear any tips you have for making the switch to safer just a little bit easier!
I know it can be frustrating and hard to navigate such an unregulated industry, but I promise it's worth it.
And, of course, if you have any questions I'm here!
XXOO!
